Winter in the Grove (3-047)
This photo was made on an early winter day in a northern Wisconsin hemlock grove following a light snowfall. The dusting of snow helps define the delicate hemlock needles. Old-growth hemlock stands have very few shrubs or small trees in the understory so visibility through the grove is quite good. A hiker would have a nice view of any wildlife that was also ambling along. But on this day I had to be content with only the trees for company and as I focused the camera on this scene they seemed quite enough.
