Pioneers (3-160)

Aspens are often the first trees to establish themselves in an old field or other forest opening, hence foresters and ecologists commonly refer to them as pioneer species. I spotted this pair while hiking near Indian Lake in southern Wisconsin. The light snowfall helped isolate the trees from the surrounding forest edge.
