McGilvra Woods (JM-24148)

McGilvra Woods is located at the edge of the Baraboo Hills in Wisconsin's Sauk County. This 15-acre woodland is one of the richest southern mesic forests in southwestern Wisconsin. Sugar maple and Basswood dominate the woods with black cherry, red oak, white ash and other deciduous species. The understory shrub layer often seen in other woodlands is noticeably absent in this tract, with a diverse groundcover of wildflowers found instead . McGilvra Woods is owned by the Wisconsin DNR and was designated a State Natural Area in 1986.
